This was the final exhibition I visited. The exhibits mainly consisted of digital print, oil painting on canvas, oil painting on linen and also chalk on blackboard. This exhibition is based mostly on the theme of life under the influences of the intertwining cultures of Chinese, Macanese and Portuguese. This is largely due to the fact that Young himself is largely under the influences of the Australian and Chinese cultures, hence he is deeply interested of lives that cross cultures and countries, and how the human spirit reacts.
The exhibits on display included "Marienbad" a digital print with oil painting (on canvas), "Mazu Goddess of the Sea I (Mazu Saves)", "Mazu, Goddess of the Sea II (The Drowning of Mazu)", "Mazu, Goddess of the Sea II (A-Ma Swimming Amongst the Pantheon of Idiots)" all three oil paintings on linen, "Macau (yellow)" , "Macau (pink)", "Macau V", "Macau IV", all four digital prints with oil paintings (on canvas) and finally "The Macau Days" consisting of fifteen pieces with digital printing on photographic paper, chalk on blackboard and painting on paper.
Through the Mazu collection of exhibits, Young tells the story and pays tribute to the Taoist Goddess and guardian Goddess of the seamen of Macau Mazu. Young then brings his audience from the myth in Chinese culture/religion to the more real life and western influenced side of Macau. The four exhibits of "Macau" illustrates the lives of a collector's home in Macau bringing the traces of their paths out of the history books in order to allow us to reflect how their lives were part of great transformations. The western influence is further shown in the poem written by Wu Li who was ordained one of the first three Chinese Catholic priests, and the digital print and painting of the western painter Guiseppe Castiglione who left Italy to stay in Macau to master Chinese, then to Beijing and building the 'Chinese Versailles' at Yuan Ming Yuan in the "The Macau Days" exhibit.
Personally, I enjoyed the "Macau" collection the most because these pieces includes digital print as a base to the piece and then an oil painting on top which creates a more layered feeling as well as making the oil painting stand out. The fact that Young chose to use two methods to create these art pieces seems to relate to the fact that his pieces and message he wants to convey is the crossing of two cultures. The fact that these pieces can make such a huge impact aesthetically and merge so well together means that we too in real life can do so.
